The Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica Silvio d’Amico in Rome

The Accademia was founded in 1936 by Silvio d’Amico. It is the only higher education public institution in Italy dedicated to training actors and directors. It is financed by the Ministry for University Studies and Research and by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.

In founding the Accademia, not only did Silvio d’Amico create an Academy of Performing Arts aimed at nurturing talent and excellence, but through it he also propounded a new “idea of theatre”, fostering a real revolution that overcame the traditional concept of drama as a discipline exclusively based on the “art of the Great Actor”. Indeed, he introduced a modern interpretation of drama by investing in the birth and development of the role of the director.

The teaching project pursued by the Accademia has always been and remains inspired by experimental research that lets its students face the different methodologies of great Masters. Today the Accademia is chaired by Salvatore Nastasi and directed by Daniela Bortignoni. Since its foundation, the Accademia offers two courses: Acting and Directing. There are also Master´s Degrees in Critical Journalism as well as Drama and Screenplay.

The Accademia is proud to have formed the most important personalities of Italian theatre and cinema. The following are just a few examples of prominent actors who attended the Accademia: Anna Magnani, Vittorio Gassman, Giancarlo Giannini, Nino Manfredi, Monica Vitti, Gian Maria Volontè, Michele Placido, Sergio Castellitto, Margareth Mazzantini, Anna Marchesini, Sergio Rubini, Luca Zingaretti, Margherita Buy, Pierfrancesco Favino, Michele Riondino, Lino Guanciale, Francesco Montanari, Luca Marinelli. As directors we may recall: Luigi Squarzina, Giorgio De Lullo, Andrea Camilleri, Luca Ronconi, Carmelo Bene, Gabriele Lavia, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti and recently Emma Dante, Arturo Cirillo e Massimiliano Civica.

Exchange Opportunities

The Erasmus program allows students, teachers and staff members to do a mobility period in an academy belonging to a foreign country. Our academy has been working on Erasmus program since 2014 with great opportunity for students, teachers and staff members.

A student who wants to do a mobility in a foreign country has to participate to a ban and if selected can apply for the chosen institution. On the other side, a foreign student who wants to study at our academy is requested to have a C level of Italian language. During the academic year 2016/2017 there was the first incoming Erasmus student in our institution, a French student who has been in “Silvio d’Amico” for three months. She was satisfied of her experience and teachers too.

The students who will have the possibility to participate in the Erasmus program will receive 230 euros a month.

To apply for Erasmus (after settling the inter-institutional agreement between two institutions in order to establish the period of mobility) the student must fill and sign a learning agreement with the courses he or she has to attend.

The Erasmus partners of our academy in 2017/2018 are RESAD Madrid, Institut del Teatre Barcelona, RESAD Cordoba, Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre Vilnius, Academy of performing arts in Bratislava, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Glasgow, ESAD Murcia, ESAD Paris, Theatre Faculty of Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts Brno.
